Motivation can be a killer especially during times such as quarantine during Coronavirus. Staying motivated is extremely important to keep the mind and heart-healthy. There are several steps to take to stay motivated and have your days be more enjoyable and fulfilling.
Making a to-do list will hold you accountable for the things you need to do and get done. Without a to-do list, it can be hard to find something to do or your mind may wander. If you need to mow the lawn, dust the baseboards, paint the window trim but you are finding it difficult to find time to complete these tasks, make a to-do list each day so you know what to expect each day.
Now, don’t just take that to-do list and push it aside, actually follow through on it. Set your alarm clock for the same time each day, grab a cup of coffee, set a timer to drink your coffee, and start your day. Have a goal to start the project by a certain time each day such as 8 or 9 in the morning. This will allow you to stay more accountable and get things done. When we get things done, we tend to be more positive and stay in a good mood.
Do a self-check list of the tasks you have already completed. This could be a special calendar that you set up on the refrigerator, near your computer, desk or a place you can see it often with your to-do list each day. Each day you complete a task, put a star or a checkmark on the day showing the task.
When we stay at home day in and night, we tend to get a little unmotivated. Or, should I say lazy. Exercising not only keeps you healthy, but it also keeps you motivated and gives that boost of energy to fulfill your day. Exercising doesn’t necessarily require you to go to the gym, there are many great apps to use or videos on Youtube to help you excel in your exercise goals. If you have kids or a dog, take them for a walk or run around the block, set up an obstacle course in your backyard, and have a competition. If you have a bicycle, going for a bicycle ride is also great exercise. This will also give a great opportunity to get to know your neighborhood and check out the scenery.
Print your goals and post them all over the place. If your goal is to learn a new art and craft but you just can’t find the time or if you would like to learn woodworking then find some artwork on Pinterest and post it on a wall on display. A certain time each day should be set aside to complete these tasks. Nothing is more relaxing than crocheting or coloring in an inspiring adult coloring book before bed to keep you motivated for the next day.
If you are having a lazy day but need to get off the couch for that fifteen-minute walk you set a goal of, your buddy will be responsible for getting you out the door and moving. Your buddy can be used as a go-to person such as doing the new craft, exercising, or going out on the town. If you and your buddy both have children, getting the kids together for a playday when the weather is nice is a great way for everyone to stay motivated and have a purpose.
Start with small achievable goals. If you start with a goal that is hard, you are more than likely to fail. Small short goals are more attainable. Taking baby steps towards your exercise, craft or to-do list is a great way to achieve long-term goals. Start off by completing one task per day and after a week, you can start checking off two tasks per day.
It may be hard to get the hard tasks done, but completing them first thing in the morning gives you a sense of accomplishment and will give you more motivation to complete smaller tasks in the afternoon. It can be a little unmotivating if you start that large project in the afternoon and not finish by night time. If it is left over for the next day, it can be a little more daunting to pick up where you left off the day before.
Reward yourself when you complete all your motivational goals. If you have completed your daily to-do checklist, give yourself a reward. This reward could be going out for coffee at your favorite coffee shop, pizza, or your favorite drink. The reward could also be a nice night out on the town with your best friend. Set your reward at the beginning of the week this way you know what the outcome of your success will be.
